Mankind has always faced all types of judgments. But the finale of all these lies ahead in the future. There will come a time when all unbelievers will stand before God almighty and have all of their sins revealed. They will each be cast into the lake of fire. 11And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.(Revelation 20)
The judgment that is described here is not for christians. Christians would have been judged according to their good works at the judgment seat of Christ which takes place after the rapture. The people that will be judged here are all unbelievers since the beginning of the age all through the millennium. They will be raised alive again. Then they will stand before the God they rejected. Because they have no sacrifice for their sins, they will have to pay the punishment for their sins. Each person after being judged according to their works will be cast into the Lake of fire where the antichrist, false prophet, and Satan already will already be. These unbelievers will be raised alive only to be tormented day and night forever and ever.
The lake of fire is not where nonbelievers go currently when they die. They go to hades. Hades is a waiting room type place where all of the fallen angels and nonbelievers wait for the final judgment in chains(Jude). This is significant to the contrast of where Christians go when they die. Once a christian dies, his/her spirit automatically goes to be with the Lord. At the Rapture, their bodies will be raised immortal and incorruptible. Their bodies will meet with their spirits. The resurrection. At the great white throne judgment, nonbelievers will be resurrected as well. But not to eternal life. To eternal damnation in the lake of fire.
"Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation." (John 5:28-29 KJV)
Notice that there are two resurrections. The resurrection of life and the resurrection of damnation. The first one is commonly known as the first resurrection. The latter is know as the second resurrection. The first resurrection occurs in several stages. Below is a chronological list consisting of phases of the first resurrection.
2. The Rapture of the church
3. Two witnesses caught into heaven.
4. The Resurrection at the end of the tribulation for martyrs and christians who have died during the tribulation.
The second resurrection has no power. It is only for the unbelievers at the great white throne judgment. The great white throne judgment occurs at the very end of history. Christians will not be judged here. Our salvation is already assured to us because we believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God. This judgment is only for people who have not.
