Unfortunately, there is a growing trend of people that like to spiritualize Gods word. Specifically Bible prophecy. The End Times scenarios to them are just taken from very vague texts in the Bible that really are only relevant to first century christians who were persecuted under Roman law.
According to these folks, the prophecies in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21, were only applicable to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. If you were to ask them when Jesus returned, they would tell you that he did come, but that it was in a spiritual sense. In other words, you can’t take books like Daniel, Matthew, Thessalonians, and most notably, Revelation literally. Let’s take a look at some of the Old Testament prophecies of Jesus. There are a total of 109 confirmed prophecies of Christ in the Old Testament but we will only look at 5 today for the sake of time.1-He would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). 2- He would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14). 3- He would ride into Jerusalem on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9). 4- The Messiah would be rejected (Isaiah 53:1-3), and 5- Jesus would be betrayed (Psalm 41:9). As you can see, all of these prophecies were fulfilled literally. There was no hidden metaphor that needed to be deciphered. Jesus really entered Jerusalem on a donkey. Jesus will really return.
The problem with the the way preterists understand scripture is that according to them, the book of Revelation foretold the destruction of Jerusalem and persecution of christians that was really prominent during the reign of Caesar Nero. According to them, Nero was the antichrist. Well, there’s one huge problem that these folks are not addressing. Nero committed suicide in 68 AD. Revelation was not written until 95 AD. There is absolutely no way that Nero could be the antichrist. This also applies to the destruction of the temple in 70 AD.
Lastly, if all the 109 prophecies in the Old Testament concerning Jesus’s 1st coming were literally fulfilled, why won’t the remaining 300 prophecies of the 2nd coming also be fulfilled in like manner? And if they won’t be fulfilled in like manner, they could have already been fulfilled without us knowing. This would imply that we are currently in the millenium. Yeah right. Don’t get me started.
